Notes[ | ]

Shannon Cross and Harrison Gibbins created a student game called Dungeon Chop Chop. Shannon brought it to Mighty Kingdom to see if we could be a part of taking it further and helping him grow it into a commercial one with it already getting some traction on the indie scene. And so we took it to a convention last year in Europe and connected with Funcom to demo for them. They liked the look and feel of the original Chop Chop and then had the idea of taking Conan in that fun, chibi, cartoon direction.
~ Kim Forrest[7]
Funnily enough, it started as a student project. We were lucky enough to show that demo off at the Paris Games Show and it caught the eye of Funcom. Back in those days it was a little 3D two-player game The genesis for it…was inspired by The Legend of Zelda and The Binding of Issac, banging all of these things together to come up with this sort of art style and this gameplay style.

The bones of it are still very similar to what Dungeon Chop Chop was, but bringing the Conan IP in allows us to deepen that lore, there is a whole lot of stuff you can draw upon..it added a lot of more depth.

In light of us not taking ourselves too seriously, the decision was made to present it as a bit of an April Fools' joke.

~ Philip Mayes
  • Uses the Conan IP. The game itself was originally a study project called Dungeon Chop Chop. One of the people who worked on this was also a Conan fan.[6]
  • RedEye estimates the price will be USD 15-20.[8]
  • DLCs, more playable characters and tie-ins from other IPs are possible future features.[6]
  • There are no plans to implement cross-device play currently.[9]
  • A playable demo was present at E3 2019, TwitchCon 2019 and PAX Australia 2019.
    • There are currently no plans for a Beta program.[10]
  • Eye of the Storm mode and 12K 360 Virtual VR were jokes and will not make it in the final release.[11]
  • The game's code name (internal name) is possibly "Wallaby".[12]
  • Age ratings:
    • US: T (13+, ESRB); Use of Alcohol, Violence

Reception[ | ]

99% of the fan response has been super positive. You get the odd sad-sack, but people generally love it. When Funcom marketing said to us "we're going to announce your game as an April Fools joke," we were like, "OK" with the eyes emoji. But it turned out to be a stroke of genius. On April 1st the response was pretty crazy with people talking about how it was a joke, but they'd love to play it. Then when we announced that it was real at E3 the response was overwhelmingly positive. So good! Being at E3 to demo such a joyous game is one of the best experiences I've had in 20 years in the industry.
~ Kim Forrest[7]
